Seasonal Pear Selection

Seasonal Pear Selection

Details

These fresh, organic summer pears are picked at the perfect stage—firm and ready to ripen to perfection. Because they’re harvested while still hard, they’ll need a few days to soften and reach their ideal sweetness.

How to Tell When a Pear is Ripe

  • Colour: Pears change colour as they ripen. For example, Bartletts go from green to yellow, while Anjou remain mostly green. Red varieties become more vibrant.
  • Texture: Gently press near the stem—if it gives slightly, it’s ripe. If it feels hard, it needs more time.
  • Fragrance: A sweet smell near the stem means the pear is ripe.
  • Neck Test: Gently press the neck of the pear. If it yields slightly, it’s ready to eat.
  • Time: Pears ripen within a few days at room temperature. To speed up the process, place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple.

Once ripe, store in the fridge to keep them at their best.

Granny Smith

Granny Smith

Details

Granny Smith is a late season apple, renowned for their distinctively tart and tangy flavor, which sets them apart from many other apple varieties. This sharp, crisp taste is often described as refreshing, with a bright acidity that can be quite invigorating. The flesh of a Granny Smith apple is firm and juicy, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite.

In terms of culinary uses, Granny Smith apples are incredibly versatile. Their tartness and firmness make them ideal for baking, as they hold their shape well and add a pleasant contrast to sweet ingredients in pies, tarts, and crumbles. They are also excellent in savory dishes, where their acidity can balance rich flavors, such as in salads with cheese or roasted meats. Additionally, Granny Smith apples are a popular choice for making applesauce, cider, and juice due to their robust flavor profile. Their ability to stay fresh and crisp for extended periods also makes them a great option for snacking, providing a healthy, refreshing treat any time of day.
